OK for those of you that avoided my winch like the plague problem partially solved. The lever for the free spool function had a detent ball under it that was gummed up. Removed side plate and with the help of some WD40 all is good now. Now the reason for the post.
I re-spooled my winch cable and found a section of the cable that has been smashed. No broken strands but is this reason to replace cable I don’t want to have a winch that is unsafe to use.

As long as it is unfrayed, it should be ok....right?

Na, it's good. Mine has been kinked and crooked for years and haven't had any issues. Just makes it harder to spool back up.
