Hey all,
My name is Jon, and I'm looking to buy a basic rig and get into all this. The only problem is that I'm completely new to everything. I've only ever driven 2 wheel drive automatic cars up until now.
I recently visited my friend in Texas, and rode with him in his Wrangler on a few trails near Bridgeport and I fell in love with all of it. My car recently got totaled, and I figured that now is as good a time as any to get into it. He suggested that I talk to a local club and see if I could ride along with anyone to get more of a feel for what I might want, make a few friends, and get suggestion on how to start.
Any help would be appreciated, and if anyone wanted to let a complete stranger tag along, I wouldn't complain.

Awesome. Great to meet you both Jperk and Dewstr1. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get started, or going riding soon and let me tag along?

The first thing to decide is whether or not it will be a daily driver or weekend toy. That will affect every decision after that. Then u just gotta figure out how big u wanna go. Do you wanna build from a stock jeep? Buy one with the work already done? Somewhere in between? Just preferences cause no matter what you get, you will enjoy it.

I agree with Justin.....mine started out a DD, but has become a toy. You'll have plenty of help with whatever you decide. Just remember, J.E.E.P. stands for Just Empty Every Pocket.

Got to be a daily driver to some degree. I don't have a car at the moment, so for a while at least, this will be my DD. I'm looking to get something with some work already done, but not too much. I want the fun of outfitting it and customizing it on my own too. From what I understand, since I want a JK, I should go 2012 or newer to take advantage of the 3.6L over the 3.8L. From what I've read, it's more reliable.
2.5" coil suspension lift maybe? I'm still new. I just know what I've read.

Procomp 2.5" coil lift is wat my dad has. Works real well all round. And you can get different fender flares to allow bigger tires later if you want. Would be a nice mild rig that would go well. And don't be too afraid of the 3.8. Our 2011 has never given us any problems. But of course the 3.6 is better all around. Just don't let it be a complete deal breaker.

I was holding off answering on the hope that I wouldn't be called into work this weekend, but I just got the call an hour ago saying that I have to work Saturday and Sunday. Looks like I won't be able to make it. Sorry about that, I was looking forward to getting out there.
